Is There a Joker in This Deck?

Kelly Thompson constructs a fun and action-packed finale to her second full arc on this title. To a limited degree, she does repeat herself. Much like in the first arc with Xandra, a vaguely defined plot device proves key to the plot, and a vibrant explosion ends the climax convincingly. Gambit and Rogue find themselves in the middle of a fight among aliens that has little to do with them personally. However, Thompson has a great voice for the characters, and has produced the sassiest Spiral yet. It’s some of the nuts and bolts of the plots of this series which could use more life.

This issue ends with the return of Gambit’s father, as well as the subplot, from issue six. Remy has literally become “the king of thieves,” lord and master of the entire guild in New Orleans. Yet he’s mostly abandoned that role in order to favor his own indulgences, such as marriage and the X-Men. And while he’s always wanted to be more than a thief, simply ignoring the guild won’t make their problems go away. It’s a far more personal and organic plot than alien epics, and the sort of thing this title arguably should have seen more of by now.
