Supergirl season 4, episode 20 review: Will The Real Miss Tessmacher Please Stand Up?

Supergirl and Lena Luthor head to Kaznia to uncover Lex’s plans. But are they running straight into a trap set by Eve Tessmacher?

Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) have an eventful flight to Kaznia in the latest episode of Supergirl. While DEO Director Alex Danvers has to take time off for personal matters, Brainiac-5 is left to deal with a grieving Ben Lockwood (Sam Witwer).

Lockwood’s wife was murdered by an alien in the previous episode of Supergirl, and now the former Agent of Liberty is baying for blood. The first people on his list are Nia Nal/ Dreamer (Nicole Maines) and newly super-powered James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks).

Alex and Kelly Have So Much in Common

During the previous season of Supergirl, Alex Danvers mentioned that she really wanted to start a family of her own. She went as far as breaking up with Maggie Sawyer when the two couldn’t agree on their future. In this episode, Alex is informed that her adoption has come through.

Though Alex’s dream doesn’t come to fruition in the end, she makes the journey with Kelly Olsen (Azie Tesfai) by her side. Kelly is deeply supportive of Alex, which is exactly how Alex was in the previous episode of the show. But viewers finally learn more about Kelly and her personal history. It’s a crushing realisation of how generous Kelly has been as a friend, when she herself has been working through such tragedy.

However the relationship between Alex and Kelly pans out, it is fantastic that the showrunners have taken a moment to build them up as characters and shown their bond over the course of several episodes.

Ben Lockwood Embraces Being a Supervillain

Ben Lockwood is probably the worst villain on Supergirl, second only to Lex himself. He’s sowed discord in the country and ripped families apart, all because of his anti-alien vendetta. The showrunners chose to fridge his wife in the previous episode to fuel his descent into supervillainy, a rare misstep in this season.

Lockwood leaves his wife’s funeral to hunt for her killer, and to take down both Dreamer and James; along the way he comes across Lena’s prototype super-serums. We all know where this is headed. Lockwood is not the kind of person who would use the serum for good and he proves it in this episode. It’s no wonder that his son has turns against him – Lockwood deserves it.

Now that the season is closing in on its last act, how will Lockwood’s new-found power harm the Super-friends?

All About Eve in Kaznia

Lena and Kara discover that Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) has been experimenting on aliens in Kaznia. Lex was spying on the DEO and chose his subjects from their inmate list. Eve Tessmacher (Andrea Brooks) was helping him, and it’s not long before Lena and Kara find Eve hiding from them at the Kaznian facility. But Eve isn’t all right, and we soon find out what the title of this episode really means.

Following Eve’s lead, Lena and Kara uncover tapes of the Red Daughter, as well as Lex’s experiments to weaponise Harun-El and Kryptonite. He’s planned a full-on invasion of America by the Kaznians. But Supergirl’s troubles have only just begun.

When Kara returns to America with news about Lex’s collusion with the Kaznians, she faces a disturbing truth.

Super Sentiments

  • Lena Luthor continues to amaze on this show. The first half of season four didn’t do her much justice, but it’s so refreshing to see a flawed, vulnerable, and complex female character who is also incredibly smart.
  • The growth of Lena and Kara’s friendship has also been perfect. Lena is so protective of Kara, while Kara really wants to help Lena heal and defeat her evil brother. Will Kara reveal her Kryptonian origins to Lena at the end of this season?
  • Brainy taking a leaf out of Dreamer’s book and making his own empowering speech to the DEO agents was a highlight in this episode. Seeing Dreamer, James Olsen and Brainy stand side by side and then joined by the Martian Manhunter will give you all the feels. Here’s hoping they’re on the front lines in the finale.

The plot thickened in this episode, and Eve Tessmacher is still on the loose. Given the denouement, how will Supergirl and her Super-friends stop Lex, the Kaznian army, and the US government?
