Avengers: Endgame had more than a few moments that were ripped directly from the comics.

Avengers: Endgame has dominated the box office for the second weekend in a row. Not only was it number one again, it’s now the second highest-grossing film of all time after it passed Titanic with a $2.2 billion worldwide cume this weekend. The only thing left is to grab the top spot that’s been held by Avatar since 2010. As of right now, it looks like it’s only a matter of time before that happens.

One of the things that makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe popular among Marvel Comics fans are callbacks to the comic books. Loki being the reason the Avengers were formed, Thor calling his new hammer Stormbreaker, or Tony Stark originally going with the Iron Man being his bodyguard excuse (until he decided to tell the world he’s Iron Man) are perfect examples, and Avengers: Endgame is no different. Some of the moments could hint at the future like an earthquake in the ocean possibly alluding to the presence of Namor. Others were more blatant and made Marvel Comics fans smile. Here are seven moments from Avengers: Endgame that are straight out of the comics.

Thanos Retires

By the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos emerged victorious against the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and chose to settle down at what was revealed to be “The Garden.” At the beginning of Endgame, the Avengers got together to find Thanos and defeat him. After that, it was time to set the universe back. Unfortunately, Thanos had already destroyed the Infinity Stones. And by that point, Thanos was truly in retirement. After who knows how many decades of slaughtering people from planet to planet, Thanos called it quits. Too bad for him, that retirement was cut short when Thor chopped his head off. Thanos literally hanging up his armor and retiring is straight out of the Infinity Gauntlet comic book.

In the comic book (Infinity Gauntlet), Thanos did destroy half of the beings in the universe. Unlike, the movie, the Mad Titan did it to please the love of his life, Death, who still wasn’t impressed. After a brief scuffle for the gauntlet late in the comic book, the universe was set back to normal. After everything was said and done, Thanos retired to his home planet. It was shocking that he was left there in peace. Especially since he did go back to terrorizing the universe. Villains never really retire.

It was cool that Marvel Studios used this moment, even if it was brief. A callback like this was specifically for the comic book fans. Adding the armor scarecrow was a nice touch, as well.
