The Pull List: Comic Books you should read this week (May 8, 2019)

There are a lot of comic books that come out every week, and it can be hard to try to navigate the waters to try to find something new, or for a first time reader, try to find a good starting point.

This week’s pull list is a mix of new comic books as well as titles that have just gained momentum heading in the busy summer season.

Flash No. 70

Writer: Joshua Williamson

Artist: Howard Porter

Writer Joshua Williamson and artist Howard Porter will embark in their personal telling of Barry Allen’s origin as they take a stab at Flash: Year One. Williamson’s run on Flash has been a good one, so it’ll be interesting to see what new elements he can add to Barry Allen’s first year on the job. Porter’s art will add a dynamic to Williamson’s Flash that will undoubtedly add a new. modern wrinkle to one of the most famous and important origin story in comic.

Shazam! No. 5

Writer: Geoff Johns

Artist: Dale Eaglesham

If you were a fan of the 2019 Shazam movie, then Geoff Johns’ comic book, of the same name, should be right up your alley. There has been a premeditated and conscious effort to try to make the comic book and the movie be as closely related as possible. The characters, themes and story are interchangeable with this summer’s movie and that is working well for the comic book. Johns is known for giving life to shelved DC characters, and he is doing just that with the Shazam! main title.

Conan the Barbarian No. 6

Writer: Jason Aaron

Artist: Mahmud A. Asrar

The Conan the Barbarian experiment in Marvel has been a success so far, and the main title is the reason why. Writer Jason Aaron and artist Mahmud A. Asrar have given life and revamped a character for the 21st century in a way that is making Conan a very sought after in the Marvel universe, with two spin-off books and Conan now being a part of the Savage: Avengers. If you haven’t read any of those books, make sure to catch up with the original title, which is hitting its stride six issues in.

Star War: Age of Republic  Boba Fett No. 1

Writer: Greg Pak

Artist: Marc Laming

One of the most famous and popular Star Wars character, Boba Fett returns with his own Age of Republic solo series. With the Mandalorian TV show just around the corner, we are going to get our fill from that corner of the Star Wars universe. So this will have to hold you over until the premiere of the show in November. Long time Marvel writer Greg Pak will lead the charge for this new Boba Fett story that is being teased as one the Bounty Hunter’s greatest bounty chases of all time.

Excellence No. 1

Writer: Brandon Thomas

Artist: Khary Randolph

Excellence from writer Brandon Thomas and artist Khary Thompson, will explore a magic world that seems to mirror our in what Image describes as “ generational war.” Image has become the go-to publisher for some of the most original comic books today, and it looks as though Excellence is the next in line. We will follow the main protagonist, Spencer, as he tries to break societal norms that plague his magical world. Make sure to pick up the inaugural issue today!
