Themes and Arcs: Chloe

Deconstructing Lucifer‘s character ensemble is the writers’ room main mission and they’ve done so to perfection in this new season. Even though the episode count was substantially shorter this season, all of the main characters were given full character arcs with themes that span from self-acceptance to dealing with grief, to having children and becoming a parent. Of course, a huge chunk of the story was focused on Lucifer and his road to self-absolution (we’ll get to that shortly), but no one had a more significant arc and a more emotional arc than the detective, Chloe Decker.

From the get-go season four deals with Chloe trying to accept Lucifer’s celestial nature. This is then intermingled with more interpersonal themes, as Chloe must come to terms with her own feelings and her relationship with Lucifer. Essentially, while she is unwithering the Devil, she is deciding if it’s even possible to love a man with such infamy defining him. It doesn’t take long for Chloe to make a choice, but it’s fascinating to see how intimate the machinations of her decisions come full circle, and what it all ultimately means. We’ve known this for a long time, but it’s in this season where we clearly see how Chloe and Lucifer couldn’t be more dissimilar, yet extremely alike.

As contradicting as that sounds, it’s perhaps the best way to describe Deckerstar since the only thing that makes them different is their lifestyles. The thing that brings them together is who they are as individuals. And that’s why Chloe sticks by Lucifer’s side and never lets go, even if she did try to send him back to Hell in the first few episodes.

Granted, she was swayed by a very convincing priest, but in the end she trusted her heart rather than betraying her best friend. But “best friends” was only a short-lived friendship, since Chloe firmly took the next step when she finally told Lucifer, “I love you.” Yeah, it finally happened. This all speaks to how well her character is written, as well as to Lauren German’s impeccable acting.

Now, Lucifer has always felt the same way about Chloe, but in this fourth season a light was shed into what truly makes his head spin.
