Where does Lucifer go from here?

The overarching narrative arc this fourth season was Father Kinley’s prophecy. It stated that “When the Devil finds his first love, evil shall be released.” That’s exactly what happened in the season finale when the demon Dromos possessed Kinley’s body and unleashed Hell in Los Angeles. Lucifer and the gang defeated the demon and managed to stop the prophecy, but as Lucifer said before returning to his kingdom:

"“Tonight we won, but we just plugged one hole in a very flimsy boat. Now the demons know I’ve no intention of returning, they’ll continue to defy me. It’s only a matter of time until they come back to Earth.”"

That means that come a fifth season, Netflix’s Lucifer might dive even deeper into Hell. The final shot of season four saw Lucifer seating on his throne in Hell, yet we all know he really doesn’t want to be there. A fifth season could explore how Lucifer was tasked to rule over Hell forever (almost flashback-esque), especially since season four also introduced us to his sister Remiel. Even the angel Michael was quickly mentioned by Amenadiel.

Potentially, Lucifer will be going full-on supernatural from here on. The show still hasn’t fully explained Chloe’s celestial nature, given her power-dampening effect on Lucifer, so it’s possible that going forward Chloe could be revealed to be a celestial in disguise.

There was a lot of talk in the season about half-angels traveling between the realms. Will Chloe turn out to be like baby Charlie and be able to travel to Hell and the silver city willingly? If so, then anything could happen in a possible fifth season.

Given the positive reaction on this fourth season, there’s no doubt that Netflix will renew the series. But this is still not set in stone. At least the showrunners are hopeful. In a recent talk with Entertainment Weekly they revealed that they already have the first scene of season five ready to go:

"“We did spend some time digging into what we think can be season 5. We even have the first scene [of season 5], which is one of my favorite things we’ve ever come up with.”"

So, here’s to hoping Netflix makes the right call in renewing the series. After such a tremendous fourth season, they’d be crazy if they didn’t.
