Legends Of Tomorrow season 4, episode 15 review: Terms Of Service

Neron attempted to damn countless souls to hell in this week’s episode of DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow, but was the demonic plan as genius as it sounds? Here’s everything that went down in “Terms of Service”.

The Arrowverse’s regular outcasts and misfits have found themselves in quite the pickle lately on Legends of Tomorrow. Following Ray Palmer’s possession at the hands of Neron, they were betrayed by Time Bureau agent Gary Green and subsequently lost fellow Legend John Constantine – who damned himself to hell in a bid to save the souls of Ray and Astra.

Naturally, they channelled all of their pent-up emotions into stopping the demon once and for all in this week’s episode, as they sought to surprise him at a presentation he was holding for a new, well, soul-destroying app. With that in mind, let’s find out if “Terms of Service” was a fitting encounter for the penultimate episode of Season 4.

Always Read The Terms And Conditions

The episode’s primary focus was on Neron’s plan to damn countless souls to Hell – the reason being that the more that ended up there by his hand, the easier it would be for him to become king of Hell.

On the surface, that plan understandably sounds like a difficult one (who would ever willingly agree to eternal damnation, right?) but all he really had to do was hide his true intentions in plain sight. That’s right, using Ray Palmer’s vessel, he revealed the existence of magical creatures to the world and, to take things further, he capitalized on their fear by creating a new cutting-edge app called “Eyes” that would allow them to alert him and others of any sightings. The caveat? Well, that’s where things get interesting.

Neron cunningly weaved the app’s true purpose into the Terms of Service – meaning that anyone who downloaded it without reading them would automatically relinquish their soul to Neron. This was something that Zari and Charlie soon discovered when the former took the time to read the small print and, as a result, they attempted to thwart him. Although they managed to save all the magical creatures, Charlie unfortunately found herself at both Neron and Tabitha’s mercy.

The writers of Legends of Tomorrow have a knack of using insane scenarios to convey important messages and, to be honest, they may have outdone themselves with this one. If we learned anything from this week’s episode, it’s undoubtedly that we should always read the terms and conditions!

Hell In A Cell

John Constantine’s trip brought up some old wounds for the demon hunter and, in doing so, allowed us to get more acquainted with his backstory. Undoubtedly the episode’s most visually impressive storyline, the sight of Constantine walking through the grimy back alleys and eerie mansions of the underworld as sparks flew in the background made us wish that we could get a solo Constantine TV series focused on his journey back to the mainland.

While he was there for Ray, the setting cleverly allowed the writers to definitively tie Legends of Tomorrow (and, in effect, the Arrowverse) to the character’s short-lived 2014 series as, during his time there, he ended up face-to-face with an adult Astra – who denied the chance to return to her life and, instead, volunteered to torture him for all eternity.

While that does raise some concerns (for both the character and the narrative), John won’t have to suffer on his own for too long as his Fairy GodNora (yeah, you read that right) is on her way to help him out.

More from Arrowverse

It will undoubtedly be intriguing to see how these two will break free from Satan’s clutches but, for the time being at least, it’s going to be a treat to see the foul-mouthed demon hunter and his supernatural accomplice raise some, for lack of a better term, hell in the finale.

Gary Green Is All The Legend We Need

It wouldn’t be Legends of Tomorrow without some off-the-wall hilarity and that’s exactly what we got from the episode’s other major arc as, with his Fairy Godmother Tabitha by his side, Gary Green tortured the Legends for all that they had done to him. But alas, he didn’t do so by damning them to Hell or causing their deaths, no his punishment for them was much more, well, Gary. As a result, he forced them to take part in his book club (after forcing them to speed read his chosen book), turned Mick into a big baby, took away Nate’s good looks and forced Sara and Ava to Charleston their hearts out – all while he commandeered the Waverider.

Of course, as entertaining as some of this was, it quickly grew repetitive. That said, it got away with it because it all stemmed from a place of meaning, as Gary only betrayed the team because they treated him like dirt and, although he was technically punishing them, he was intentionally making it petty so that he could protect them from any real torture at the hands of Neron or Tabitha. When you really think about it, that in itself, is damn fine characterization and totally in line with what Gary would do.

In a way, this wasn’t just Gary’s character journey. While it’s true that he did realize that he didn’t want to hurt them anymore and undid it all, the Legends also realized how awful they had been to him in the first place and, when all was said and done, they all let bygones be bygones. And although they never directly referred to him as a Legend, they anointed him something far more important – a friend.

Very nice, Legends.

Legendary Leftovers

  • The opening scene was so well-executed that I was really excited to see the siege on the Time Bureau that the Legends were planning. I’m not sure I’ve ever hated Gary more for stopping it from happening. Can they pick up where they left off next week?
  • Wasn’t Ray Palmer presumed dead after the explosion at PalmerTech in the Season 3 finale of Arrow (that allowed him to become small)? If so, shouldn’t Neron have addressed that in his TV promos?
  • Nora becoming a Fairy Godmother is the kind of ridiculous twaddle that only Legends could get away with. So, as you can imagine, the sight of her in a turquoise dress (with wings and a wand) as she got sucked into a portal to hell, shouting “Screw you, Gary!”, didn’t phase us in the slightest. Oh Legends, never change.
  • Argentine Tango six weeks ago. Charleston this week. Is there any dance Sara and Ava can’t do?
  • The episode’s closing scene saw the Dragon begin to hatch its way out of the golden egg as a young Zari looked on. What on earth that will lead to we can only imagine.
  • This marked the penultimate episode of Legends‘ third season as this magical creatures saga will come to a head in next week’s season finale.
