Wolverine leaves and more X-Men death in Uncanny X-Men No. 18

The Uncanny X-Men go through a handful of changes in Uncanny X-Men No. 18.

Things for the Uncanny X-Men have gone from bad to worse. This is a normal thing for Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants, but things are bleaker than normal. The issue starts with the X-Men getting a major blow. Wolverine leaves the team.

In the previous issue, Logan and Cyclops had a bit of an argument over what to do about Rahne’s killers. This is nothing normal. When Logan said he was done, I thought this was a bluff. He wasn’t bluffing. Logan told Illyana that the X-Men weren’t there to save people anymore. He said, “I was around for saving the world or whatever…but this? Ain’t nobody trying to save anything anymore. They’re trying to make sure they look good in the history books.”

If you’ve been following the Uncanny X-Men since Cyclops rejoined the team, Logan isn’t far off. His intentions are noble, but it looks like his execution is off. Stepping down as leader showed this and this issue highlights it even more. Chamber killed some of the Marauders even though they weren’t the ones who killed the Morlocks and ends up getting killed by one of the survivors. Then Hope shoots Chamber’s killer. Cyclops barely bats an eye at this. If that wasn’t bad enough, they get back to base and Mr. Sinister is there and he burned down their home/bar. And Havok almost dies overusing his powers. Thankfully, Xi’an had a house being built. However, she quits after the X-Men get settled in.

The issue ends with Cyclops talking to his brother Havok. Cyclops doesn’t’ seem to care about not knowing what’s going on with his memory loss. The last page reveals that Emma Frost and Mystique are working together and everything is going according to Emma’s plan.

X-Marks the spot

  • What is Emma Frost up to? Is she completely evil or is she trying to help? How are she and Mystique coexisting?
  • Why did Mr. Sinister give up so easily? He always has a plan. What’s he up to?
  • Who’s the next X-Man to leave or die? It seems to be happening more and more.
  • With Hickman’s run starting soon, what does that mean for this current X-Men roster?
  • What will Wolverine do next? We know he’s currently fighting in the War of the Realms with Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. But what about after that?
