Why it was so heartbreaking: While now we know that Peter Parker comes back, it didn’t stop this death from being so heartbreaking at the time, leaving us in tears from the trauma. Even knowing he returns, rewatching the death is hard.

It’s easy to forget Peter’s age when he’s dressed up as Spider-Man. He takes on the weight of the world on his shoulders as the “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” and you can overlook the fact that he’s just a teenager. So, the way he reacted to the idea of disappearing may have been surprising to some.

The death wasn’t the bit that hit me the most. It was seeing Peter’s reaction, the way he clung onto Iron Man. He didn’t want to go and he was willing to do whatever it took to remain on Earth. We were given that stark reminder that he was just a teenager and we were reminded of how we would react if we were thrown into that situation.

And this was a death that hit Tony Stark hard. You could see it in his eyes that he regretted everything that came to pass up to this point. He put the blame on himself for failing to stop Thanos. That loss was a personal one for him and it became personal to get him back. The hug Tony gave Peter when everyone returned made it clear that in five years, he’d never really gotten over that death.
