Nuclear Man gets an atomic beatdown in Captain Marvel No. 5

Just Who Is This Mystery Villain?
And as always, there is a hidden villain lurking in the midst. It seems that the random monster attack which Carol and Drew thwarted in issue one was far from random. A mysterious woman brags about having furthered her plot against Captain Marvel hidden from view, which seems to include a sample of Carol’s DNA. Just who is this mystery lady? The next issue promises Amora the Enchantress, so it could be her.

Yet the technology around her suggests a more modern menace. Madame Masque is free from the cancellation of West Coast Avengers, while Mystique was once Carol’s arch nemesis. Mystique literally murdered Carol’s boyfriend, Dr. Michael Barnett, in 1992’s Marvel Super-Heroes No. 10. It could even be Lavish, the mad scientist villain that Kelly Thompson created for her Rogue & Gambit series. Lavish may be a dark horse choice, but either Masque or Mystique would be a thrill.

Kelly Thompson’s finale to he first arc as writer is a spectacular action set piece. It is chock full of the one-liners, bold fisticuffs, and determined dialogue that fans young and old expect from top quality superhero comics. While Thompson has a great voice for Danvers, she does well by fleshing out the others. Danvers has some sass and a sense of humor, but not nearly as much as some of the others. She-Hulk, the heroine Thompson would probably love to write long term, gets some great moments here.
