The Bad

Not all new eras and character changes are a good thing. One story in particular still makes comic book fans cringe. Spider-Man: One More Day will go down as one of the biggest tragedies in comic book history. J. Michael Straczynski‎ put together a Spider-Man run that was as close to flawless as you could get. He took Spider-Man and Peter Parker and put him up against classic villains and problems, but also gave him new hurdles to jump over. It ended with Spider-Man’s continuity being torn to shreds.

After decades of making Spider-Man what he is, he was taken away in four issues. Mephisto made a deal with Mary Jane Watson-Parker so Aunt May could live The deal meant that Peter Parker and MJ wouldn’t have gotten married. This caused ripples that made all sorts of things off. Peter and Flash were never friends, Spider-Man no longer had his organic webbing, and everyone in the world forgot Spider-Man’s true identity. All of that build up just to have it removed from continuity.

While I have complete faith in what Jonathan Hickman’s ability to create a new era for the X-Men, stories like One More Day leave me concerned. Changing what makes characters classics can hurt a franchise. Hopefully, this will be another classic run by Hickman.
