Thanos may not have had a lot of screen time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a ton of memorable moments.

WARNING! This article contains Avengers: Endgame Spoilers!

There was hype around Thanos ever since he first appeared during the mid-credits scene in The Avengers. The casual fan may not have known who he was, but comic book fans went wild.  He’s known as one of the most feared beings in the Marvel Universe, and for good reason. He’s tough and strong, and he’s also an intellect with a strategic mind. In short, he’s the complete package. Thankfully, he didn’t disappoint when he appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thanos came, saw, and conquered. The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Wakandan military had no answer for the Mad Titan, the Black Order, or his other creatures. It may have taken five years after he won but, in the end, he was finally defeated. The Avengers had to go back in time, sacrifice two of their teammates, and fight a younger and unprepared version of Thanos to beat him. Since Thanos has been dusted, let’s look back at his best moments in the MCU.

Movie: The Avengers

No one knew who Loki was working for in The Avengers. All we knew is that he had an army at his disposal and that he had a mission. Unfortunately, for Loki, he lost and was taken away by Thor. After the movie ends, there is a scene where one of The Other is speaking to a man sitting in a large chair. Viewers couldn’t see his face, but The Other seemed afraid by his mere movement. When referring to humans, he tells the figure, “to challenge them is to court death itself.” Thanos then turns around and smiles. This is the beginning of what ends in Avengers: Endgame.

Thanos’ smile is iconic in the comic book universe. It’s so sinister because that happiness comes from his thoughts of the carnage he’s going to create. The idea of reaching his goals through death and suffering. That one smile made everyone watching feel like something ominous was coming, and that feeling was spot on.
