Monsters run amok in Sabrina the Teenage Witch No. 2
By Alex Widen
Better Get Kraken!
Sabrina immediately suspects Allen is the Kraken, and rushes after him. It causes her to literally bump into Harvey for the second time in two days. Fortunately, their “meet cute” dynamic continues, as Sabrina has to cover for all the weird plants that her aunts have stuffed into her backpack. Harvey asks her out, and Sabrina is too surprised and flattered to refuse! In no time flat she’s found herself with the pick of two hot guys in class, and neither of them seem like bad guys!

Rather than hang out with Harvey, though, the curiosity of a teenage witch abounds. Tracking Allen to a boiler room, even Sabrina notes how cliche the scene is in regards to monsters. Undoing her “blinding” spell doesn’t resolve the situation, as Allen is just as freaked out to have a girl suddenly appear before him! And it seems that fear triggers his transformation, or summoning, of monsters. This time he’s a Chinese dragon and not an octopus, but is this distinction moot for Sabrina?

This is hardly the first licensed comic featuring a legendary heroine that Kelly Thompson has relaunched. She “earned her bones” in the industry writing Jem & the Holograms for over two years. And while she’s done notable work for Marvel lately, there seems to be a different spark to her work for heroines from other companies. From Ghostbusters to Nancy Drew, Thompson seems to have a knack with boiling down a franchise to its essence and reviving it in a way which honors the past, yet forges ahead to the future.
