The Suicide Squad rumored to add Benicio Del Toro as main villain
As the cast forms for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, the film’s main villain is rumored to be this veteran actor.
James Gunn’s brief ousting from Disney saw him take over the director’s chair for DC’s The Suicide Squad, which will reboot the franchise that became a box office success in 2016 but was critically panned. Gunn will return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but this anti-hero team-up will precede it.
Idris Elba and Joel Kinnaman are among the names in for the film, but the eventually confirmed group of protagonists need an antagonist to face. It is rumored to be Benicio Del Toro as The General, as rumored by Empire.
Del Toro and Gunn are not unfamiliar with each other. The former played The Collector in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy; not just then, but in Thor: The Dark World and Avengers: Infinity War.
As for this potential The Suicide Squad character, The General could be Wade Eiling, who is affiliated with the Suicide Squad in the comics. This villain also appeared in The CW’s The Flash.
If so, this should be a somewhat familiar persona for moviegoers familiar with this popular DC television show. Plus, it could tie in a military storyline to work with, and with a veteran actor like Del Toro at the forefront, this can be a compelling add-on to the DCEU’s revamped appearance.
Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is currently tapped for an Aug. 6, 2021 release. It is far away, so more information should arrive as production and the cast become official.
