Jason Fabok is right, Batman deserves better than Catwoman
Does Batman deserve a better relationship in his DC Comics arc?
DC Comics artist Jason Fabok is receiving some flack lately. Recently, he took part in the controversial opinion of Batman take on Twitter. He simply states ‘He deserves a better woman than Catwoman…’ and many fans were quick to tweet their responses. Yet, Jason Fabok is not entirely wrong. Now before you rally your pitchfork and assume Jason Fabok hates Catwoman, that is simply not the case. He states:
I agree with Fabok on this, especially as he compares her to something of a fling. It’s true, we always see Catwoman in a more sexualized way than romantic. Does any fan truly buy into the idea of themselves settling down with someone like Catwoman? A character like Lois Lane sounds plausible, but not Catwoman. Do you see yourself bringing Catwoman home to meet your parents. Catwoman is more of that sexy, bad girl you lust for in your high school years. Only later on you realize you want more – perhaps commitment, consistency and possibly a family as well. The time for fun is over.
Part of the problem may also stem from Catwoman’s involvement and influence across the mediums for Batman. A more general audience knows of her from television dating back to 1966, to major motion pictures, video games and cartoons. Whereas comic book enthusiasts can also remind you of Talia, Silver St. Cloud, Julie Madison, Vicki Vale, the original Batwoman, Natalya Trusevich and some fans love the idea of him and Wonder Woman together. Yet, even the comic book enthusiasts have Catwoman thrust upon them with these various shows and movies.
Adding to this is just the simple notion of these two that people love to push. They wear costumes, leap across rooftops at night and are both highly skilled at what they do. But these are surface level details. We might as well ship Bumblebee and Cyborg together just because they are black and Teen Titans. Keep in mind Catwoman is not out to seek justice. She has no problem in using guns and killing people if necessary. Catwoman, unlike Batman is something of an adrenaline junkie in her nightlife. She enjoys the persona of Catwoman, but for more selfish reasons.
No doubt, people are upset about the wedding still but also looking forward to the new series. Nonetheless, Jason Fabok says something that I feel has needed discussing for a while. It is time to push against the conventional narrative and challenge this relationship even more. DC can only keep pushing for this relationship throughout all mediums, only for it to usually not pan out. Maybe it is time to give up on these two and look to the horizon for others.
