Natalie Gumede has been cast as Mercy Graves in Titans
DC Universe’s Titans has found its Mercy Graves in English actress Natalie Gumede.
First we have Superboy, then Deathstroke and now we have Mercy Graves! At this point, who else is joining the series of DC Universe’s Titans? Who is playing her you ask, why none other than Natalie Gumede.
Many are probably wondering who Natalie Gumede is. Some may know her best as Ashley Carter from the Doctor Who Christmas special of 2015. She is a British television actress, and has been in the television industry for over a decade. She is new blood compared to others, but already has a lengthy resume of television credits. Do not worry, some no-name is not taking up the role of Mercy Graves. She is also a series regular in shows like Jekyll and Hyde, as well as Free Rein. This however is her first major, American series.
The producers detail Mercy Graves’ bio as:
"“Mercy Graves is the ruthless, cunning, right hand and bodyguard to the notorious Lex Luthor – serving her boss with unquestioned loyalty. Her connection to the Luthors runs deep, as Mercy has been a friend of the family and in Lex’s life since they were young.”"

She has a history with Lex Luthor from a young age? Now that is a new angle. In most incarnations, she is simply a right-hand and bodyguard. She is to Lex, what Harley Quinn is to Joker. In Young Justice, Mercy Graves is a robot while, In Batman v. Superman, she is swiftly disposed of by Lex Luthor. Hence, what role will she play in DC Universe’s Titans? For one, it is doubtful Lex Luthor comes out in glory and all in this series. In most DC television shows, the major players are usually in the background. Perhaps she plays a role similar to that in Justice League, where she runs the company after Lex Luthor goes full criminal. Here, she is not a series regular, but a recurring guest character. Hence, serving as the mediator between the team and Lex perhaps sounds the most reasonable.
It is certainly interesting that a black woman is playing Mercy Graves. Hopefully, this will not result in some backlash similar to Starfire’s casting. With this and the previous announcements for Titans, the second season sounds exciting!
