Jessica Jones season 3, episode 10 review: A.K.A Hero Pants

The latest episode of Jessica Jones takes us on an emotional roller coaster from start to finish.

Previously on Jessica Jones, Jessica had to do the hardest thing of her life. She had to help a murderer avoid going to jail by tampering with evidence. But not just any psychopath. She helped Gregory Salinger, the man who killed her adopted mother and Trish’s birth mother, Dorothy. If that wasn’t bad enough, when Trish found out that Jessica helped him to save her from jail, she was furious.

The episode ends with Jessica’s office being searched by the homicide division of the New York Police Department. And during the search, Jones learns that the police officer that she and Erik blackmailed was beaten to death, and she’s their number one suspect.

Back to basics

This episode begins where the last one ended, with Jessica being questioned by the detectives searching her office. While she’s being interrogated, her phone is ringing off the hook. She’s supposed to be with Trish looking at funeral arrangements. But the detectives weren’t showing any sympathy, either, as their comrade was just beat to death. This was the kind of scene we haven’t seen this season, and it was a perfect way to open the episode.

It’s been a while since Jessica Jones had a real issue with the police this season. Sure, there were some run-ins, but nothing too major. Without her friend Detective Eddy Costa, she has lost the protection she had from the police. That means she’s going to have to be more cautious than she has this season. This is classic Jessica Jones. She’s back to having the cops hate her because she is who she is, and this is a good time in the series to do this, right when things are getting hairy.

Jeri Hogarth is cold-blooded

More from TV

In the previous episode, Hogarth found out that Trish Walker is the masked vigilante. We all knew it was only a matter of time before Jeri contacted her, but it admittedly happened sooner than expected. After Jeri finished dealing with the case for Kith, she had one of her employees contact Trish, since her firm is in charge of Dorthy Walker’s estate. She knew Trish’s mother just died but, in true fashion, Jeri just didn’t care. And that was cold-blooded.

Jeri Hogarth is one of the better characters in all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Netflix shows. She may not be likable, but she’s good at being unlikable. So far, Jeri has been even more devious than normal. She’s doing things to people she cares about in order to get whatever she wants. But as evil as it is, it’s understandable. With her ALS getting worse, she knows it’s only a matter of time before her body is useless. If she wasn’t this bad off, it’s doubtful she would be this ruthless.

Final thoughts

This was the best episode of Jessica Jones season 3 so far. It evokes all of the feelings that season 1 gave off. It also featured Jessica versus the police, Malcolm’s relationship with Jessica costing him happiness, and a good story that was a roller coaster of emotions. The scene in which Jessica goes to Erik’s house had a ton of emotional elements, all the way down to the music. Season 2 needed more moments like this. There was even a moment with Kith and Hogarth where viewers may actually empathize with Jeri. In addition, seeing Jessica cry was difficult, as she’s always been one of the toughest characters around. Overall, this is an episode that will be remembered as one of the series’ best.
