Kamala leads the team against the Disir in Champions No. 6
By Alex Widen
There’s No Perfume That Hides the Stink of Death!
The Champions have valiantly defended the city from a horde of Amora’s zombies, despite being vastly outnumbered and not at full strength. Civilians have been saved and despite some new faces on the team like Aracely, everyone is getting along. That is until the Disir arrive. Led by Brun, they have been tasked with quelling this insurrection for Amora and are impressed enough by the Champions’ mettle to allow them to surrender. As anyone who has ever read fiction would know, Kamala refuses, and a fight ensues!

Tough enough to fight evenly with Thor and the Warriors Three (among others), the Disir initially make quick work out of half the team. While Snowguard and Power Man can hold their own, Patriot and Locust are quickly overwhelmed, with Pinpoint saving the latter literally by accident. Ms. Marvel takes on Brun, leader-against-leader. This quickly proves to be a mistake because Brun not only is strong but, like any Valkyrie, can see those who have been touched by death itself.

In this case, Brun can “see” the fact that Kamala was fated to die, and the only reason she didn’t was because of Miles’ deal with Mephisto. The fact that Mephisto briefly controlled the Disir is just an extra detail. Kamala has been trying to forge ahead despite this trauma, but it’s merely a facade, and the elastic girl crumbles from the pressure. Fortunately, the advantage of being on a team is that there is always someone there to back up another, and Power Man steps up to the plate!
