Kamala leads the team against the Disir in Champions No. 6

No “Uggos” in the Marvel Universe?
Juanan Ramirez puts together another solid issue on art, alongside Marcio Menyz’s colors. It is a shame that the Disir have gone from being uniquely hideous to “typically hot.” It wasn’t a development which is Champions’ fault, but it continues the disturbing trend of Marvel not allowing many female characters, even villains, to be less than “hawt.” Recent examples include Sin and Marrow, and it’s a tad pathetic. On the other hand, a major Brazilian city isn’t depicted like a jungle, so that’s a plus. All of the superhero designs work off each other, and the action is satisfying enough.

The next issue promises to focus more on the founding members of the team — Nova in particular. Zub’s focused a lot on him since taking over for Mark Waid, trying to make him more than an unintentionally awkward jerk. It will remain to be seen of how Kamala copes with her trauma. Will she leave the team entirely like Miles, or just allow someone else to lead? And if so, who — Viv? With sales on this series hardly being healthy, Zub may only have another 4-6 issues left, tops. His goals may be ambitious, but it will remain to be seen whether or not this title will execute all of them.
