6. Gamora – New Mexico
You may think of the desert when you hear New Mexico, but that’s not 100% true. New Mexico has snow-capped 13,000 feet peaks, wildflower fields, and riparian forests. That’s a pretty diverse landscape. New Mexico is also the home to the largest hot air balloon festival in the world! And while Colorado can boast about their high altitudes, Santa Fe is the highest capital city in the United States at 7,000 feet above sea level.
The indigenous people of New Mexico have been living there for around twenty thousand years. Probably longer. Groups like the Pueblo, Apache, Comanche, Navajo, and Ute were living here centuries before the Spanish settled here. New Mexico is also the capital of Indigenous people. The indigenous New Mexico reminds me of Gamora.
Gamora’s people were some of the victims of Thanos’ war on the universe. She was helpless and distracted as Thanos’ army killed her parents and 50% of the people on her planet. This is similar to the way the Indigenous people were treated. The Indigenous people of this country may be few, but they’re strong. Gamora might be the last of her kind, but she also remains a reminder that to challenge her would be a mistake.
