This run for the newlywed X-Men comes to an end. Can Rogue and Gambit overcome Candra and her unified guilds? And is there time for home Cajun food?

It seems like only yesterday when Marvel comics teased the marriage of Colossus and Shadowcat for months, only to wed Rogue and Gambit instead. Whether it was a bit of clever plotting or a bait-and-switch is debatable, but it resulted in Kelly Thompson getting to pick up right where she left off with the Rogue & Gambit miniseries. The end result has been a honeymoon in space, a belated engagement party, and a tour of Mojoworld. Now, it’s time for a finale which wraps up the series’ longest running subplot — beyond the couple getting used to married life.

For much of his existence, Gambit has straddled the line between hero and thief. Much like his wife, this is more to do with family ties than genuine desire. His father warned him that there were rumblings with the Thieves and Assassins’ Guilds back in New Orleans, and that was an understatement. The immortal mutant Candra is back, and has united both guilds against their absentee “king of thieves.” To this end, Candra is giving Remy an impossible choice to make.

Stuck in a prepubescent form following her latest resurrection, Candra needs a magical sacrifice to fully restore herself. She forces Gambit to choose between his new wife Rogue, and his ex-wife, Bella Donna. The latter wasn’t prepared to be betrayed, but she should have expected it. Candra was a member of the “X-Ternals,” a group of immortal mutants who have betrayed each other for generations. It’s hardly the first time Remy has been through this; Sabretooth dangled his brother and girlfriend off a ledge in 1991’s X-Men No. 33.
