Could the World Handle the Offspring of Mr and Mrs X?
In no time flat, Candra is defeated and Gambit is once again the “King of Thieves.” It soon comes time for he and Rogue to depart. They still haven’t heard from the X-Men and need to get back to their “real” lives. However, Jean-Luc insists that they have time for one more stop. It leads them to the home of 19th century swamp magician Tante Mattie Baptiste, who is as close to a mother as Gambit has had in his life. She first turned up in 1994’s Gambit No. 3 and hasn’t appeared in a comic in almost 19 years. It showcases Thompson’s long memory to include her!
Soon talk of battles and guilds falls way to talk of good home Cajun cookin’ and when the pitter-patter of little feet with black and red eyes will be gracing their home. The talk circles back to when Gambit rescued Spiral’s soul from Mojo, and it assumed the form of an infant. Was it a sign that Gambit wants to be a father, or did it portend something else? Considering how often the pair make love now that Rogue’s found a way to control her powers, it may be inevitable.

The issue, and series, ends very much as it began. Rogue and Gambit are not a traditional couple, or even traditional X-Men, yet that’s part of why they’re together. Each of them has had to defy expectations and tragedies in their lives to eke out some sense of morality. In the eyes of some, they’re never be more than their roots in the Brotherhood, or the Thieves Guild. But to each other, they’re all they could ever want, through thick and thin. Besides, scoring such a sweet penthouse in Manhattan which allows pets for less than a million a month may be the greatest theft of all!
