The Real Battle May Be Seeing a 13th Issue!

Regular artist Oscar Bazaldua doesn’t return for this climatic issue. Instead, Javier Pina (Doctor Strange) wraps things up, and does a great job.  The opening page which plays with a variety of art styles for some flashbacks is a common trend for Thompson’s tales with this pair, and Pina handles it well. This issue had plenty of action to chew on, and he makes it all flow with lots of fast pacing and explosions. Frank D’Armata, as always, ties it together with some vibrant color work.

As the second of Thompson’s ongoing titles to come to an end in less than four months, it may be worth taking note of some trends. Over at IDW, Thompson forged a career out of handling Jem & the Holograms for roughly three years. Yet despite earning an exclusive contract with Marvel Comics, she’s only had more than a dozen issues to work with once — and that was with Hawkeye. Two of her series — A-Force and West Coast Avengers — were capped by issue ten. Captain Marvel is holding firm for now, but it is a shame that a writer who excels at longer subplots is unable to have an extended run at the “house of ideas” yet due to market realities.
