The Skrulls and S.W.O.R.D.
In the very last scene we find out that the Nick Fury and Maria Hill we saw throughout the movie were actually Skrulls in disguise – which makes sense given that Fury was trusting of Mysterio. They then called the real Fury to tell him that they needed him, only for the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director to hang up.
When Fury does get out of his seat, we see that he’s actually in space on a ship with a bunch of Skrull workers. This could mean a couple of things, and one of them could reveal the new S.H.I.E.L.D. called S.W.O.R.D. and, as a result, give us the comic book arc we’ve all been waiting for.
S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) is the intergalactic version of S.H.I.E.L.D. With S.H.I.E.L.D. no longer existing and aliens officially becoming an issue for Earth, this could be Nick Fury’s new role in the MCU. We knew there was no way he was just going to sit around and do nothing. More importantly, we found out that the Skrulls are no longer dying out. This could mean we’re finally getting Secret Invasion.
Comic book fans have wanted this for years. The idea of the Skrulls infiltrating Earth is one that could lead to so much mystery. You’d never know who is a Skrull and who isn’t, which would undoubtedly lead to fighting and trust issues between teammates and perhaps even end in a battle that no one will ever forget. And it would also lead to some changes in the Avengers roster as well.
