Supergirl season 5: Kara’s new costume has been revealed

Supergirl is getting a brand new outfit on the show’s upcoming fifth season, and the Girl of Steel herself, Melissa Benoist, has unveiled it.

Supergirl is currently on a midseason hiatus and, after what the Girl of Steel went through during the emotionally exhausting fourth season, it’s safe to say that the break is a well-earned one.

Season 4 took the show into more political territory, as Kara found herself caught between humanity’s war on aliens, which only got worse when the morally corrupt Agent Liberty used fear to widen that divide. Undoubtedly a major change from the heroics that the show is used to tackling, it proved to be both enjoyable and educational.

However, the brilliant theatrics returned in the explosive season finale when Kara went up against her cousin’s archenemy Lex Luthor in an epic final battle – one that was worthy of the comic books that inspired it, and was ultimately a fitting conclusion to a strong season.

With Season 5 on the horizon, you can rest assured that more change is on the way – and not even Supergirl’s iconic costume is immune to these changes as it’s also set to receive a major update.

Taking to social media, the Girl of Steel herself, Melissa Benoist unveiled the new outfit and, well, let’s just say that “Super” doesn’t do it justice.

Though, on the surface, much of it appears to look the same (but a little more streamlined), there are some noticeable differences, such as the more-defined shoulder pads and the sharper belt. The biggest change, however, is undoubtedly the absence of her iconic red skirt, which has been replaced with long blue tights instead. As a result, the outfit bears quite the resemblance to Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman costume.

From the House of El symbol to her iconic red skirt, The CW’s iteration of Supergirl’s costume is renowned for being quite close to the comics – which is why this new look is rather shocking. That being said, it’s an equally as epic look that Melissa Benoist pulls off to perfection – and it’s one that fans will undoubtedly love just as much.
