Arrowverse crossover: Brandon Routh to reprise Superman role

Both Brandon Routh and Tyler Hoechlin are to appear as Superman in this year’s blockbuster Arrowverse crossover, “Crisis On Infinite Earths”.

The annual Arrowverse crossover has become something of a major TV event. Each year, the producers continue to outdo themselves with bigger and better storylines that constantly leave CW viewers in awe. This year, however, may just be the biggest.

Not only will it be a five-part crossover, consisting of episodes of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman, it will also see the culmination of five years worth of storytelling, featuring the long-awaited “Crisis On Infinite Earths” event.

While this is undoubtedly huge in its own right, it just got even more super, as according to Deadline, both Tyler Hoechlin and Brandon Routh are going to portray alternate versions of Superman. That’s right, we’re getting not one but two Men of Steel.

Hoechlin first donned the red cape on Supergirl, and has recurred throughout the series, last appearing in last season’s Elseworlds crossover, while Routh (who already portrays Ray Palmer/The Atom on Legends of Tomorrow) portrayed the character in the 2006 blockbuster Superman Returns.

While it’s not yet clear how the producers are going to make it happen, both actors are expected to portray Clark Kent at different time frames. Now, given that the existence of the multiverse itself will be called into question, it’s highly likely that Routh could end up playing the exact version of the character he played in the 2006 film (Earth-06 Superman anyone?).

The question is: Will the two Men of Steel end up interacting with each other or Supergirl and, perhaps more importantly, will Routh’s Superman cross paths with his Atom? Surely that must happen, right?

More information on this huge development is expected to be revealed at San Deigo Comic-Con.
