If Clark Gregg’s comments about the Agents of SHIELD season six finale are to be believed, fans should expect a mind-blowing end to Season 6 which will rip the rug out from under their feet!

When Agents of SHIELD‘s fifth season came to a close, the creative team behind ABC’s his Marvel drama put a nice bow on many of its stories with a finale read much more like a series finale than season finale. As Clark Gregg revealed in speaking with reporters during San Diego Comic-Con, the finality of Season 5’s finale felt like a goodbye because it was initially intended to be one.

"“We kind of did our goodbye, our ending, at the end of season five. We hadn’t heard if there was going to be picked up and the [episode] was called ‘The End.’ It was very moving and we did that goodbye. And then we came back to do two more 13 episode seasons, which we were thrilled to do,” Agents of SHIELD leading man Clark Gregg began in previewing the predicament of returning after such a fitting finale."

Fortunately for fans, ABC had other plans in place. The series was eventually picked up for a sixth season and soon after secured a seventh and final season order – the cherry on top for fans of the Marvel franchise. The decision has given the writers the ability to take new chances, further the character arcs for the show’s core group of heroes and introduce a handful of new faces – including one with a not so unfamiliar face (here’s looking at you Sarge).

It’s been yet another inventive and action-pack season, full of new and equally unexpected twists which are quickly coming to a head. While it remains to be seen just what the final two hours of the season will hold, Gregg promises Season 6’s closing hour will blow fans’ minds and set the stage for a major departure from the show’s previous seasons.

"“A lot that’s going to happen in this final [hours of Season 6] is pretty mind-blowing, explosive and really rips the entire rug of the first six seasons out from under people,” Gregg teased of the conclusion to Season 6 before hinting at what’s to come in Season 7. “And so season seven is a big departure. The ending will be reflective of that and the changes that happened before that.”"
