Van Helsing star Jennifer Cheon Garcia will guest star as the villain Midnight in the Supergirl season five premiere later this year.

The final episode of Supergirl season four introduced the central villains for the show’s next season – Leviathan, who have enlisted J’onn J’onzz’s brother Malefic. While these characters may act as the overarching nemeses for Supergirl and her Super-Friends, villainous guest stars will also appear on the show, starting with Midnight, who will be played by television star Jennifer Cheon Garcia. Cheon Garcia joins new cast members Julie Gonzalo and Staz Nair, as Kara dons a brand new suit to fight evil in the upcoming season.

According to Variety, Midnight is described as:

"“the physical manifestation of darkness, Midnight is a murderous villain released from an otherwordly prison to enact revenge against the person who put her there.”"

The description shared doesn’t seem to match any existing comic book character, so Cheon Garcia’s Midnight could possibly be created for the show itself. The only Midnight known in DC Comics is a masked detective created during the Golden Age of Comics. Cheon Garcia’s Midnight seems far removed from that rendition. The character sounds like a particularly powerful being, so Supergirl will have plenty to deal with from the first episode of season five onwards.

More from Arrowverse

We are also curious to know more about this “otherworldly” prison, especially since the majority of Supergirl’s villains on the show are escapees from the Phantom Zone. So is Midnight from a similar place?

Supergirl season four set the bar high for how genre shows can represent real-world issues; what was particularly impressive was how the show carried the theme of acceptance throughout the season’s run. Expectations are high for season five, which the showrunners have touted as having Black Mirror-esque vibes.

Of course, all eyes are on the major crossover event – “Crisis on Infinite Earths” – which will take place midseason across the five Arrowverse shows. We can expect deaths and twists, as the Arrowverse characters bid farewell to Arrow.

Supergirl returns for season five Sunday, October 6 on The CW.
