Titans season 2: Which new characters appear in the trailer?
By Monita Mohan
The first trailer for Titans season 2 has been released, and there are so many new characters to look out for. We list them all here.
Titans fans, the first look at season 2 has arrived!
The superhero series made history last year when it became the first original show to air on the DC Universe streaming service. It initially received a lukewarm reception from fans before significantly improving as it progressed towards its finale.
Now, after a long wait, DC Universe has released the trailer for the show’s much-anticipated second season – precisely a month prior to it airing on September 6.
If you haven’t caught the trailer yet, check it out below:
The trailer is chock-a-block with characters, old and new, including season one stars Brenton Thwaites (Dick Grayson), Anna Diop (Starfire), Teagan Croft (Raven), Ryan Potter (Beast Boy), Conor Leslie (Donna Troy), Curran Walters (Jason Todd), Alan Ritchson (Hank Hall), and Minka Kelly (Dawn Granger).
But, alongside these mainstays, which other characters appear in the trailer?
Bruce Wayne: Dick Grayson’s story is intrinsically connected to Bruce Wayne’s – without his mentor and father figure, the character’s backstory lacks depth. The first season of Titans certainly suffered from that, heavily hampering Grayson’s characterization. The showrunners must have realised this, because earlier this year, Games of Thrones star Iain Glen was cast as the Caped Crusader. We see Glen briefly in the trailer, looking dapper in a suit (though not the Batsuit), seemingly antagonizing his former ward, Grayson. It’s unlikely that Glen will play a huge role in the second season, but his addition as Bruce Wayne will add some much-needed dimension to the storyline.
Deathstroke: Slade Wilson is one of the Titans’ greatest nemeses in comic books. So, it was not a surprise when he was added to the cast for the second season. While we don’t see Esai Morales as the character, Deathstroke appears near the trailer’s end in full costume – it’s a much darker, hi-tech version of the bi-colored outfit readers are used to. It’s obvious from Deathstroke’s grim introduction that he will play a central villain in the second season of the show. Considering how much of a favourite Manu Bennett’s Arrowverse version of Deathstroke is, it will be interesting to see how Titans handles the character.
The Wilson Siblings: While Deathstroke plays the villain of the piece, his children, Chella Man’s Jericho and Chelsea Zhang’s Ravager, are slated to be heroic members of the Titans. Jericho has been a long-time member of Titans in the comics, and he’s almost always been a good guy; Ravager on the other hand, will need to earn her teammates’ trust on the show. The Wilson family add some much-needed diversity to the cast, especially Chella Man, who is now only the second out transgender actor, after Nicole Maines, to be cast as a superhero.
The Other Titans: The roster of characters who have been members of Team Titans in comic books is vast, and the Titans showrunners are valiantly attempting to add a few fan-favourites to the show. The trailer introduces Drew Van Acker’s Aqualad, decked up in a brilliant red supersuit (as opposed to the blue one that is synonymous with Garth’s other renditions), and fighting alongside Wonder Girl and Robin. We also see Joshua Orpin as Superboy meeting Krypto the Superdog. It’s likely that Aqualad will appear in flashbacks of the original Titans team, while Superboy will slowly make his way onto the new team.
Not only are we excited to be introduced to a host of new comic book characters on Titans season two, but so many of the characters have updated supersuits that match their comic book looks. How much screen time this giant cast of characters will get remains to be seen, but this trailer does enough to excite viewers to return for the next season.
There are a couple of other characters we glimpsed in the trailer who we aren’t able to identify. Starfire and Donna Troy are seen battling a red-haired woman, while Jason Todd fights a helmet-wearing villain. Who could these characters be? Speculate away in the comments below.
Titans will return for season 2 on September 6, only on DC Universe.
