4. Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola is a true auteur. Her films are not highly regarded, but they are always interesting. Her latest film, The Beguiled, had a very interesting gothic visual to it with a slight feminist message around it, as well.

If Warner Bros. wants to be ambitious and make the DCEU unique, Coppola would be a great choice for Batgirl. Her desire to direct comic book movies is not well known, and it is more likely that she wants to direct her own movies. Her next project, On the Rocks, is coming out next year and appears to be another low-key, small-budget film. However, her visual style and unique vision could be what Thor: Ragnarok was for the MCU: a movie that both fits well within the universe but is also a unique movie that brings a breath of fresh air to the franchise.

Of course, most people know Coppola from Lost in Translation, but she has done so much great and arguably better work since then. Her movies like Marie Antoinette, The Bling Ring and The Beguiled also show that she can and has a desire to direct movies with female leads that are complex.

These movies are by no means perfect, but she always has an eye for visuals and knows how to capture an audience through it. Movies are a collaborative process, and having a capable team around her that knows Batgirl and action can be the best of both worlds where the character of Batgirl is presented in an arthouse style while also giving the faithful history of the character and fun fight scenes along the way.
