3. Niki Caro

Niki Caro is another independent director that could potentially break out next year and open herself up for more big projects. She is directing Mulan, which will be releasing next year and, if that movie ends up being not only a financial success but also a critical success, Caro could be in line for more blockbuster movies like Batgirl.

Caro previously directed movies like The Zookeeper’s Wife and Mcfarland, USA. These movies were a bit uneven in terms of pacing and fell short of giving the audience a huge emotional attachment to the subject. The Zookeeper’s Wife especially had a heartwarming true story behind it, but the movie did not do enough to fully get a viewer interested in the subject matter of a World War II story.

The little information that is out there on Batgirl could signal that Warner Bros. wants to use all the Batgirls and not just Barabara Gordon. This is possible if the DCEU is still operating on the idea that Batman is a veteran and has been Batman for a very long time, meaning that he has gone through multiple Robins and Batgirls. This idea would be a good way to push multiple stars in one movie and give comic book fans a lot to chew on with multiple characters.

Disney hiring Caro for Mulan signals that they see the small nuggets in The Zookeeper’s Wife and Mcfarland, USA where there is a massive emotional tug that Caro is going for in her movies. They have had mixed success in the past, and it is entirely possible she has learned from those movies and can successfully make Mulan, which could transition into an ensemble Batgirl movie.
