How Batwoman will feature the origin story of Hush

One of Batman’s most famous villains will be making his presence felt on The CW’s Batwoman, and here’s how it’s going to happen.

It goes without saying that Batwoman is one of this upcoming season’s most anticipated shows.

The latest to join The CW’s ever-growing Arrowverse, the show stars Kate Kane as the cousin of Bruce Wayne who, in the midst of the Dark Knight’s absence, decides to take it upon herself to protect the citizens of Gotham by becoming a new hero known as Batwoman.

While the trailer received a rather negative response, the character’s first appearance on last season’s Arrowverse crossover, Elseworlds, received acclaim from fans and critics.

It was in that trilogy of episodes (of Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl) that we discovered that Batman does indeed exist in the Arrowverse but that he had been missing for three years.

The show itself will undoubtedly explore Bruce’s disappearance further, but we now know that we should also expect to see some of his greatest rivals show up on Batwoman.

It was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that one of Bruce’s most personal enemies, Thomas Elliot (a.k.a. Hush), would make an appearance on the show. This, of course, confused fans as Elliot holds a personal connection to Bruce – given the pair were best friends during their childhood – and not Kate.

Showrunner Caroline Dries has since explained how the show intends to explore Hush’s origins. Speaking to GameSpot at the TCA Summer press tour, she revealed:

"“In the comics, he’s obsessed with Bruce Wayne, and you get to understand a little tease of that relationship. And what helps us is that Kate and Tommy knew each other from growing up, because Kate was intimately engaged in Bruce’s life… And so Tommy is the perfect villain for the time of the series, which [is when] Kate put on the [Batman] costume.”"

It certainly sounds like the show is going to play off the fact that Tommy’s childhood friendship with Bruce brought him into Kate’s life. But could that eventually lead the Caped Crusader himself showing up? Well, Dries certainly appears to think that it will give us some answers regarding the Bat who started all, explaining:

"“Tommy, as you’ll see the way the story unfolds, is sort of the perfect marriage between a Bruce Wayne/Batman/Kane Kane story.”"

Notice that Dries referred to Tommy as a “villain”. Does this actually mean that we’re going to see him don those infamous bandages?

Whatever happens, it appears that Batwoman had better prepare herself to face the wrath of Hush and that the bandage-wearing menace better prepare himself for Gotham’s newest Bat.
