Crisis On Infinite Earths: Which Bruce Wayne will Kevin Conroy play?

Kevin Conroy is coming to play Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse’s Crisis On Infinite Earths? Which Bruce Wayne of the multiverse could he play though?

Everybody who is anybody in the DC Comics fandom has probably heard the news by now.

Kevin Conroy, the veteran actor, who has spent the past two decades voicing Batman in countless forms of animation and video games (most notably Batman: The Animated Series), has been cast as Bruce Wayne in The CW’s upcoming Arrowverse crossover Crisis On Infinite Earths

However, one cannot help but wonder: Which particular Bruce Wayne is he playing? As the crossover does concern the entire multiverse, we all know there is more than one Bruce Wayne.

With that in mind, here is a list of potential versions of the character Conroy might be portraying.

Batman Beyond

The first Bruce Wayne incarnation that many instantly went to is that of Batman Beyond. Keep in mind, Conroy is playing Bruce Wayne and not Batman in Crisis, and throughout the entire animated series he only voices Bruce Wayne, while the character of Terry McGinnis takes the mantle of Batman. Unless you want to count that one episode – Disappearing Inque.

For years now, fans have wanted Michael Keaton (who portrayed Batman/Bruce in Tim Burton’s two Batman films) to return as Bruce Wayne for a Batman Beyond film. No doubt, this is the closest they can get to that fan-dream.

One could argue that Kevin Conroy is roughly 20 years too young to play this role, but that’s what make-up and prosthetics are  for. Plus, this not is a hard sell or too much to ask for – given that Conroy convincingly voiced the old Bruce Wayne two decades ago.

Kingdom Come

Mark Waid’s and Alex Ross’ seminal Kingdom Come gives us a unique Batman, as here, the Dark Knight’s secret identity of Bruce Wayne is public knowledge. However, people still refer to him as Batman.

This Bruce Wayne is late-middle aged, just like Kevin Conroy – already benefiting his casting.  Conroy would have to wear an exoskeleton like in the graphic novel, as it is this that allows Bruce  to still hold up as Batman.

Can the veteran voice actor also bring that sinister grin that this Batman is renowned for? Hard to believe he cannot.

This Batman also deploys robots to do most of his work and has a falling out with Superman. Some fans even criticize this version of the character as a fascist.

Kingdom Come has yet to really break out of the comics, save for a small nod in Batman: The Brave and The Bold, so an appearance of this Bruce Wayne in Crisis On Infinite Earths would be huge progress for the comic.

The Dark Knight Returns

Frank Miller’s Batman universe sounds like a safe bet as well. The Dark Knight Returns is just as popular as Kingdom Come, if anything – more popular!

Bruce Wayne is in his fifties here – which is close enough to Conroy’s age of 63. He’s been reluctantly retired from the role of Batman for nearly ten years, ever since the death of his partner, Jason Todd.

The idea of Kevin Conroy playing a physical role such as Frank Miller’s Dark Knight seems like a stretch – he may be a veteran actor, but he’s not a physical actor like Ben Affleck was.

Crisis On Infinite Earths can work around this though, as we could meet Bruce before he takes up the role again. They could also borrow from The Dark Knight III: Master Race with him retired and acting as a surrogate father to Carrie Kelley. This latter approach sounds more enticing, as given that The Dark Knight Returns is becoming too common, Crisis On Infinite Earths has an opportunity to try a different route.
