The long-awaited Moon Knight announcement has finally happened, as the hero is headed to Disney Plus in his own live-action TV show.

Certain heroes have been well-known for decades. Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man are only a few. Other characters like Luke Cage, Black Panther, and Okoye needed a bit of a resurgence. All three did well once they were introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There’s another Marvel Comics character that’s between being well-known and a cult favorite, someone who got revived with a new personality in the comics. That character is Moon Knight.

The Hollywood Reporter reported (via the Disney D23 Expo) that Moon Knight will be one of the newest additions to the Disney Plus streaming service. There has been a lot of anticipation surrounding Moon Knight. He’s unlike a lot of the heroes that we’ve seen in the MCU. As we’ve seen with Amazon’s The Boys, people enjoy superheroes that aren’t what they’re used to seeing. Originally, Moony was a kind of Marvel’s version of Batman. He’s had a cup of tea with the Avengers and then disappeared for a while. However, when he returned, he became something different and frankly better.

Moon Knight’s series (written by Charlie Huston and drawn by David Finch) breathed new life into the Lunar Legionnaire. He started off not being able to walk and, with the help of some of his enemies, he was given a reason to fight again. That’s pretty standard superhero stuff. However, they gave Moon Knight a darker vibe, as well. For example, in the second issue, Moon Knight cut off the face of his archnemesis in praise of his god Khonshu. And that’s not all. Moony is crazier than the Sentry and Punisher combined.

First off, he has three personalities, and that’s not including his civilian persona. There’s the blue-collar cab driver Jake Locksley, the rich Steve Grant, and the vigilante Moon Knight. If the split personalities weren’t enough, there’s the god Khonshu that may or may not be real. He’s a god who’s caused him to kill in his name and has resurrected him on a few occasions. Despite all that, no one knows if he actually exists.

Moon Knight will hopefully be a hit. Making this a show instead of a movie gives the creators a chance to dig into his backstory, his personalities, and all of the randomness that makes him a very complicated character.
