5. John Wesley Shipp

John Wesley Shipp is undoubtedly a pop-culture icon. Renowned for his legendary leading performance on the brilliant-but-short-lived 1990s TV series The Flash, he was the first actor to really bring Barry Allen to life on-screen. He’s also known to modern audiences for his recurring roles as both Henry Allen and Earth-3 Flash, Jay Garrick, on The CW’s Flash TV series, and he even reprised his role as the ’90s Scarlet Speedster during last season’s Arrowverse crossover.

A veteran of film and TV, he’s also known for his roles on Dawson’s Creek and Teen Wolf. However, before all of those well-remembered offerings, Shipp was a soap opera veteran.

First appearing in 10 episodes of CBS’ record-breaking Guiding Light (across a four-year period), he went on to play the villainous Doug Cummings in As The World Turns – a role for which he won a Daytime Emmy Award.

He would then appear in 11 episodes of NBC soap Santa Barbara as Martin Ellis – a role which won him another Daytime Emmy Award- before appearing in other legendary daytime soaps like One Life To Live and All My Children.

A career to admire before he became The Flash, John Wesley Shipp has been amazing us for decades.
