2. A More Grounded Year

There came a point last season when we all started asking “What happened to Riverdale?”.

Don’t get us wrong, it was still highly-entertaining, but we couldn’t help but wonder at which point a show about teenagers who got dragged into a murder investigation as they attempted to make it out of a problematic town descended into a supernaturally-tinted show about biker gangs and demonic woodland creatures.

Thankfully, the premiere photos suggest that those dark days are in the past, as we are allowed to see Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Kevin Keller, Reggie Mantle and Josie Mills just relaxing in the grass and apparently enjoying the summer.

While this scene is more than likely before Archie discovers that his father has died, the transition to that storyline is still going to be an incredibly human one, as the premiere appears to be focusing on the character-driven storylines instead of far-fetched tales about Gryphons and Gargoyles.

Though you could argue that last season’s premiere did the same thing, series developer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that the show would be returning to the character-centric roots of the high school environment this year. And, well, if seeing is believing, it’s safe to say that we definitely believe now.
