3. “Confessions” (Episode 20)

“Confessions” marked the return of Roy Harper to the present-day narrative and, in the process, initiated an unexpectedly brilliant whodunit – as the SCPD interviewed every member of Team Arrow in a bid to find out who killed two subway station guards. From the genuine suspense to the surprisingly emotional payoff, this seamlessly pulled off everything it set out to do – all while making for one hell of a watch.

2. “The Slabside Redemption” (Episode 7)

The thing that really made this one stand out was just how legitimate the stakes were. Oliver, a wrongly imprisoned man, was finally going to be released from prison, only to discover that his archenemy Ricardo Diaz planned to kill him before he could. What followed was an intense thriller of an episode in which the former hero of Star City quite literally had to fight for survival.

In a way, “The Slabside Redemption” should have been the midseason finale, as it finally put the Oliver/Diaz saga to bed in the most appropriately hard-hitting of ways, as the two enemies beat the living daylights out of each other in the midst of a prison riot. “Perfect” doesn’t cover it.

1. “Lost Canary” (Episode 18)

Earth-2 Laurel’s redemption arc came full-circle in an expertly-executed offering that saw her return to her villainous roots one more time so that she could exorcise them altogether. And that became a surprisingly strong basis for the creative team to finally give fans the Birds of Prey-themed episode they had been waiting years for.

With Sara’s White Canary back to team up with Dinah, Laurel and Felicity, the episode proved to be well worth the wait and an example of just how great Arrow can be when it focuses on its strongest characters. And the whole thing was worth it just for that closing shot of Laurel Lance finally regaining what was always hers: the Black Canary mantle.
