MCU: 30 sets of actors and crew who have worked together outside the franchise
26. Anthony Hopkins and Dakota Goyo
They played father and son in Thor but, after that movie, Anthony Hopkins (Odin) and Dakota Goyo (young Thor) played grandfather and grandson in 2014’s Noah.
Hopkins played Methuselah, while Goyo played young Noah.
27. Evangeline Lilly and Benedict Cumberbatch
What does the second Wasp have in common with Doctor Strange? They were both in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit Trilogy. Lilly played an original Silvan Elf character, Tauriel. Cumberbatch, as previously mentioned, plays the dragon Smaug. Tauriel and the dragon debut in the same film, The Desolation of Smaug.
28. Linda Cardellini, James Gunn and Seth Green
She’s Laura Barton, and he’s the voice of Howard the Duck, so when did Linda Cardellini and Seth Green work together? Also, how does James Gunn fit in?
In 2004, Cardellini and Green starred together in Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, as Velma Dinkley and Patrick Wisely, who was Velma’s love interest in the film. James Gunn served as the film’s writer.
While it’s a coincidence the trio worked on MCU films, it’s also a coincidence that the two actors don’t appear in a scene together in the one Marvel movie they’ve appeared in together — Avengers: Endgame. James Gunn is a producer on the same film.
29. Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba and Benedict Cumberbatch
The Losers isn’t the only film Zoe Saldana and Idris Elba have worked on together. They both had roles in the Star Trek films. Saldana played Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in Star Trek (2009) and its two sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016). Elba played the villain in Star Trek Beyond. Now, you might be wondering where does Cumberbatch come in?
Before Elba, Cumberbatch played the villain Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness. Cumberbatch’s role in the film was remembered for being so secretive that the public knew who Cumberbatch was playing before it was even announced. Abrams did his best to deny it, but there was only so much he could do about it. It was a case of the fans saying, “Don’t BS us!”
30. Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal
MCU fans know Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Jake Gyllenhaal as Quentin Beck/Mysterio, but did you know they appeared together in the film Brothers? In the film, Portman plays Grace Cahill, a woman who comes to form a close relationship with her previously estranged brother-in-law, Tommy played by Gyllenhaal.
Tommy was released from prison and tries to rebuild his relationship with his family including his older brother, Sam played by Tobey Maguire, who played Spider-Man from 2002-2007. Grace and Tommy bond over their mutual “loss” when they’re lead to believe Sam died when his helicopter went down. The missing soldier returns home sometime later and believes his wife is having an affair with his brother.
There’s plenty where these come from. If there’s any we missed, tell us below!
