Jefferson and Lynn being locked up “for their protection” is a clear violation of their rights. However, Black Lightning is a prime target for the Markovians, and since Lynn was a target in the previous season, she has to be sent away as well. This leaves Anissa and Jennifer (who still doesn’t have control of her powers) alone to fend for themselves and protect Freeland. Good thing they have Gambi with them.

Anissa is still Freeland’s mysterious savior Blackbird, except she’s upgraded her uniform. It looks like Gambi set Anissa up to be more than just Black Lightning’s sidekick. Considering the issues she was having with her father, it’s not surprising. This is a step in the right direction. With Black Lightning away, her being Thunder puts a target on her head. Being Blackbird makes her a new player in the eyes of the Markovians.

Anissa going out as Blackbird instead of Thunder also shows that she is her own hero. Something she started to do in season 2. We’ll definitely see her with her sister and father in their respective team uniforms before the season ends. For now, however, it’ll be good to see Anissa in a different light.

If Blackbird is well-received, who knows, maybe we could be looking at her in a spin-off in the future? At the very least, she could end up being a focal point in a future crossover TV event.
