NYCC 2019: Wolverine is getting his first ongoing solo series since his death
By Mark Lynch
Wolverine is finally back, and he’s about to get his first solo comic book series in years.
In 2014, Marvel Comics announced the Death of Wolverine. The title said he was going to die, but many readers didn’t believe it. They thought this was just a metaphorical title, and Logan would be getting his healing factor back. But they were wrong. Logan died and stayed dead. However, everyone knows that comic book characters don’t remain in the land of the dead, especially ones as popular as Wolverine. Wolverine made his return in Marvel Legacy No. 1 by killing some Frost Giants and holding an Infinity Stone. And Return of Wolverine would provide an explanation for his return Later, he made his return to the world in Uncanny X-Men 11 (2019). It’s been five years since we’ve had a solo Wolverine series but, thankfully, that’s about to change:
During this year’s New York Comic Con, it was announced that Wolverine will have his first ongoing series in five years. Benjamin Percy, writer of Wolverine: The Long Night Podcast, will be joined by artist Adam Kubert (who previously drew Wolverine) and Viktor Bogdonavic (The Silencer). These two fantastic artists will rotate duties drawing Logan. Fans of Wolverine may be concerned about what direction he could be going, but the passion in Benjamin Percy’s comments will hopefully put those fears to rest. He says:
"“We all have that character. The one we love more than any other. The one we treasure in books and movies and maybe memorialize with a T-shirt or tattoo. The one we relate to as a cracked-mirror version of ourselves. For me — as a growly, grumpy, hairy, smelly, muscled, flannel-clad, whiskey-swilling loner who lives in the woods of the frozen north — it’s Logan. And though this might sound corny, it also feels right to say that writing Wolverine is a dream come true, a childhood fantasy realized. No kidding, bub.”"
With everything that’s happened during the House of X and Powers of X, It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. If Logan starts killing people, will he be exiled from Karkoa? Will Xavier or Magneto send him on missions and not tell the rest of the council? And that’s just to start. There are a few other things that need to be addressed, as well, things that came up during Return of Wolverine.
First off, there’s Persephone — the woman who brought him back in the first place. Logan destroyed her space station and a chance for her to rule the world. She’s not going to sit back after Logan ruined years of planning. It’s been a while, so she’s probably finished licking her wounds and is ready to get her revenge. With Sabretooth’s absence after House of X No.6 (which could be indefinite), Logan is going to need a new nemesis. Maybe Persephone will fill the role.
When Logan came back, he developed a new power. His claws will burn white-hot whenever he goes into a rage. However, we haven’t seen this power since the final issue Return of Logan. Logan kept his berserk side locked in a cage in his mind and, as he was locked up, that personality screamed, “I’m still here! I’ll always be here!” He’s right. He will be back. Logan’s rage is an important part of Wolverine’s character and, while he may hate it, his fans love it.
Whatever happens next, we’ll all be reading. Having Wolverine back in a solo series just feels right. It’s almost as if something was missing from Marvel Comics. It will be particularly exciting to see him encounter the Immortal Hulk, Miles Morales, and so many of the other Marvel heroes. If his appearances in War of the Realms and the War of the Realms crossover Strikeforce are any indication of how things are going to be, we’re in for more amazing adventures from the best there is at what he does.
