Batwoman caught us all off-guard in the second episode of its debut season when it directly referenced Wonder Woman.

The arrival of Batwoman in the Arrowverse brought with it a ton of intrigue. Not only did it allow us to see Gotham City up close and personal, it confirmed the existence of The Dark Knight himself, as Barry, Oliver and Kara all had to directly reference Batman in last season’s Elseworlds crossover.

Ever since the show itself hit our screens last week, it too has made multiple references to the Caped Crusader, noting that he had been missing for three years and that, in his absence, Gotham had gotten lost. This, of course, serves as a basis for Kate to become Batwoman.

The references to Batman weren’t just understandable, they were unavoidable given that the pair are so closely linked. However, the second episode of the show made an unexpected reference to a different major DC superhero (and fellow Justice League member), as Kate Kane actually referred to Wonder Woman by name

Speaking to Sophie Moore, she denied that she was “Batman” (who all of Gotham thought had returned while Sophie knew the new hero was a woman). She followed up the denial with the following statement:

"“Besides, if I were going to save you in a dramatic fashion, I would totally dress as Wonder Woman.”"

Of course, the comment sent the internet into meltdown because it was the first time that Wonder Woman had ever been directly mentioned on an Arrowverse show.

What’s even bigger is that it took place on Earth-1, confirming that somewhere on the same plane of existence as Oliver Queen, Barry Allen, Kate Kane and the Legends, Diana Prince is running around in her satin tights fighting for our rights.

More from Arrowverse

It shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise given that the Arrowverse has teased us with the character’s introduction before. Over on The Flash, Barry and Captain Cold walked past a cell in A.R.G.U.S. that was labelled “Cheetah” (Wonder Woman’s arch-nemesis) while on Legends of Tomorrow, Zari dropped Helen of Troy off on Themyscira to meet the Amazons.

Nonetheless, a direct reference to Wonder Woman is just as huge as a direct reference to Batman would have been a year ago. Thus, with Crisis On Infinite Earths approaching, could we see a version of the lasso-wielding icon show up?
