Just before Star Wars enters a frenzy of releases during the last two months of 2019, disappointment has come regarding the property.

In an exclusive from Deadline, it has been announced that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have exited their deal with Lucasfilm in which they would be producing a trilogy of Star Wars films, set to release in 2022. The first film in the trilogy was set to be the first film in the series not related to the Skywalker saga. Reportedly, the exit is simply due to their schedules being full due to their Netflix deal, which has lessened their availability.

While talking to Deadline, the duo stated that “There are only so many hours in a day, and we felt we couldn’t do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects.” This is a bittersweet note for the franchise, as the announcement for the two joining the Lucasfilm team was massive back when it was announced in early 2018.

However, given the divisiveness of the final season of Game of Thrones, there are plenty of people who see this news as a good thing, especially after a recent Twitter thread from a panel the two headlined painted them in an incompetent light:

With Benioff and Weiss exiting this new trilogy, it’s currently unknown if the trilogy will still be happening or if it will be cancelled altogether. Lucasfilm currently has several other films in development from both Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson. They also have several television shows in development, one of which, The Mandalorian, is set to debut on November 12th on Disney Plus.

So even with Weiss and Benioff’s trilogy possibly being cancelled, there will be no shortage of Star Wars content being release over the next few years. Just in the final two months of 2019, will see the release of the aforementioned The Mandalorian, video game Jedi: Fall Order, and the final film in the Skywalker saga, The Rise of Skywalker.
