13. Carol Danvers defects

Movie: Captain Marvel (2019)

Carol Danvers gained her powers after a conflict between the Skrulls and the Kree. As she got her powers, she lost her memory. The Kree took this opportunity to kidnap her and train her in the way of the Kree. Fun fact, the Kree are narcissistic jerks. They may be the worst beings in the galaxy.

Carol ends up of Earth after an accident sends her crashing into a Blockbuster video (for our younger readers, Google it). During her time on Earth, she meets Nick Fury, visits her old friend Maria Rambeau, and regains her memory. This begins the story of Captain Marvel becoming a true hero.

It may seem weird that this is ranked higher than Thor being banished, but there’s a good reason for this. Had Carol never gained her old memories, one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy would have been under the control of the Kree. The things the Kree may have made Carol do would have shifted power in the entire universe.

Imagine is the Kree army had defeated Thanos and retrieved the Infinity Stones? The Kree possessing the stones would be catastrophic. We should all be happy that Carol remembered who she was and sent Yon-Rogg back to the Kree homeworld. Maybe this could be a What if…? story.

One more important thing to note. Without Carol meeting Nick Fury, he may not have started the Avengers Initiative. Captain Marvel exposed Fury to a world he didn’t know existed. It’s one of the reasons we got the post credit scene in Iron Man.
