Betty gets more than she bargained for from the FBI’s Junior Training Program when it unlocks a repressed memory of a traumatic incident from her childhood that leaves her questioning what kind of person she really is.

Meanwhile, over at Stonewall Prep, Jughead learns more about his grandfather’s past and is surprised to find they have a lot in common.

Plus, FP arrests his suspects in the “cold-blooded” murder of Jughead Jones — three guesses who! Here’s a look at what went down in “Witness for the Prosecution.”

Who killed Jughead?!

So remember THAT flash-forward at the end of Season 3 in which Archie, Betty and Veronica are half-naked, covered in blood, burning their clothes and Jughead’s beanie, and Jug is mysteriously absent? Looks like they may have really killed their best friend, after all. At least, that’s what Sheriff FP Jones seems to believe.

Riverdale‘s latest episode ends with FP barging into a classroom to arrest the remainder of the Core Four. And, frankly, Archie, Betty and Veronica don’t seem very surprised by the turn of events. Could they really have done it, or is there something else going on entirely? Is Jughead even dead?

Betty is on to Charles… but also pretty freaked out about herself

So, unsurprisingly, Betty is really good at this whole FBI training thing, maybe a little too good. After successfully identifying multiple serial killers strictly based on their mugshots, she realizes her intuition is so on point because of [DUN DUN DUN] her serial killers genes.

After a test confirms that she does indeed have the genes, Betty starts reevaluating everything and remembers to her horror that she killed the family cat, Caramel, as a child. In reality, Caramel was hit by a car, and Hal ordered Betty to mercy-kill the cat with a rock; but Betty feels guilty and scared of what she might be capable of, nonetheless.

She decides to quit the FBI program since it’s hitting a bit too close to home for comfort, but Charles tries to talk her into staying by admitting that he too has the genes and purposefully joined the FBI to “keep the darkness in check.”

Charles’s confession actually does end up convincing Betty not to quit. She now knows he’s up to something, so she doesn’t want to let him out of her sight. But if Charles has already bugged her phone and who knows what else, who’s really surveilling whom?

Sister vs. Sister

Turns out Betty and Jughead aren’t the only ones with a mysterious, antagonistic, long-lost, older half-sibling.

Basking in the triumph of successfully freeing her mom from prison by blackmailing the governor… again, Veronica is thrown for a loop when a private investigator shows up at La Bonne Nuit claiming that she has proof Veronica worked with the federal prosecutor to frame Hiram and that she used that proof to get all the charges against Hiram dropped.

But, wait, there’s more: the P.I. is Veronica older sister, Hermosa – Hiram’s “other daughter.” And she’s not going anywhere, nor is Hiram. Fresh out of court, with Hermosa by his side, he announces he’s running for mayor.

Introducing Forsythe III

Jughead is shocked to learn that his favorite book series, The Baxter Boys, was most recently ghost written by his teacher, Mr. Chipping; that it was was created by a classmate of his grandfather’s; and that the creator and Mr. Chipping are looking for a new writer to take up the mantle.

More from TV

When Jughead excitedly asks FP about his grandfather, Forsythe, FP initially has nothing good to say about the abusive, alcoholic man. However, he eventually, albeit reluctantly, reveals that Jughead’s personal Baxter Boys collection was a gift from Forsythe.

Jughead later uncovers a secret, ominous note from his grandfather, warning Jug to “trust few,”  which FP had torn out of one of the books. The next day, Jug announces to his writers’ group that they should now call him Forsythe III, and that he will be the next Baxter Boys ghost writer… all he has to do is come up with “the perfect murder.”
