15 greatest superhero movies of the decade
9. Logan
Released: March 3, 2017
Fox’s X-Men series may have had more ups and downs than any film franchise in history, but one of its major highs came in the form of Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine. With that, it’s hardly surprising that he headlined three solo films, and though not all of them were great, the third time was undoubtedly the charm.
A live-action adaptation of the critically acclaimed Old Man Logan, 2017’s Logan was unlike any superhero movie we had ever seen before – and certainly unlike anything we’d come to expect from this particular universe. While the X-Men films were attempting to retrace their fantastical steps through time with a younger cast, Wolverine was attempting to live his pain-ridden life a very dystopian future.
With a wonderful script (that not even a somewhat mindless antagonist could take away from), a dark and gritty setting, and a no-holds-barred approach, Logan soared to unbelievable heights, giving Hugh Jackman a chance to really sink his teeth (or claws) into the character in a way that he was never able to before. And he was nothing short of phenomenal.
There’s a reason that Logan is often mentioned in the same sentence as superhero movies like The Dark Knight. It takes a comic book character and magnifies the realism in his world in order to heighten the importance of the story. The result is a poignant tale of a how man with nothing to live for suddenly has everything to fight for – and that benefits from the film’s gritty tone and unapologetically violent nature.
