1. The movie does not need answers, especially it’s ending.

Fan theories were abundant after Joker. After witnessing the events of the movie, the ending leaves two possible scenarios: either the events were a figment of the imagination of a patient at a mental institution or the movie’s events did happen and that is why this patient is at a mental institution.

The ambiguity of the movie is one reason why it sticks in people’s minds. It is what shapes their opinion about the movie and what it ultimately has to say. Where would the sequel go then?

If the movie’s events did happen, then does the new Joker go out and recruit his own supervillain team? Bruce Wayne is too young to become Batman unless they want to go the Gotham route and not care too much about that.

The important point is that there needs to be someone to stop the Joker. The anarchy at the end of the movie hints that only a vigilante like Batman can stop him, but if there is no Batman, then what’s the point of another Joker solo movie?

If the movie was a fantasy, then does the sequel just rehash the themes of the first one? Any point that was made would then end up losing its meaning.

Some may disagree, but the movie does not really say a lot. There are attempts at telling a larger story about society, mental health and social inequality, but the movie does not really do all in on a theme. Thus, a sequel would just be another offering with half-baked ideas that would tarnish any goodwill that Joker merited.
