Stargirl will air on both DC Universe and The CW

Originally supposed to be a DC Universe exclusive, Stargirl will now also air on The CW.

Stargirl will be the first DC Universe original to air on traditional television.

According to Deadline, the series will air on The CW a day after the episode premieres on DC Universe and will then also be available on The CW’s online services on the day following the television premiere.

So even though Stargirl will be airing on other platforms, there is still some sense of exclusivity for DC Universe subscribers.

This is an interesting move for DC Universe as it seemingly makes them look desperate licensing out their original shows, but it’s a smart business move. Most of the original shows on the platform so far have been aimed at a more mature audience, all with a TV-MA rating, with Young Justice: Outsiders being the only exception. Stargirl was always going to be aimed at a slightly younger audience than those other shows and The CW seems like a good fit for the show to find a larger audience.

More from DC Universe

The channel has plenty of already established DC shows, so it will fit into that niche well, while also falling into the high school drama niche that has been popular on the channel. Also, by airing on The CW, there’s a sense of brand synergy as DC Universe and The CW are both owned, at least partially, by the same parent company.

Stargirl won’t be the only DC Universe original to branch out from the streaming service. Doom Patrol season 2 will also be airing simultaneously on HBO Max, another bit of brand synergy.

From the outset, Stargirl has always seemed that it would be a good fit for The CW given the tone of the comics it is being based off of, so it’s no surprise that it will be on both platforms. No premiere date has been announced, but it is expected to begin airing in the second quarter of 2020.
