Erica Durance speaks on Smallville reunion in Crisis on Infinite Earths
Former Lois Lane star Erica Durance discussed the Smallville reunion with co-star Tom Welling for Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Before the Arrowverse, there was Smallville, a superhero drama series developed by writer/producer duo Alfred Gough and Miles Millar for The WB/The CW that followed the events of a young Clark Kent before he revealed himself to the world as Superman. It ran for ten seasons between 2001 and 2011. In the series finale, Kent took flight and donned the suit, and the rest is history.
As revealed last month, Tom Welling and Erica Durance, who played Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively, were revealed to be reprising their roles in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Durance opened up about her mini Smallville reunion with Welling. The co-stars are seen at the familiar Kent farm in a set photo within the Batwoman portion of the crossover, which will pick up with what they have been doing since the finale. Durance said:
"“It’s a little bit of a look into their future and the different choices they’ve made to be together. It’s a full-circle moment that’s really nice.”"
The five-hour crossover event will span across Supergirl, Batwoman, The Flash, Arrow and Legends of the Tomorrow. Marc Guggenheim, the executive producer of the annual event, informed EW of his vision for the forthcoming crossover and about what they [The CW] intend for their adaptation of Marv Wolfman and George Pérez’s 12-issue comic series:
"“One of the things that we said very, very early on in the pitches to the studio and the network is that this can’t be ‘Crisis on CW Earths.”“This has to be ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,’ and we have to touch as many strands of the DC tapestry as possible.”"
Since the decade-long Superman prequel series concluded, Durance starred in a medical drama, Saving Hope, before portraying Supergirl’s mother, Alura, in the aforesaid show. Meanwhile, Welling has explored directing and producing and also landed a main role in the third season of Lucifer. Clearly, the Lois Lane star has some working chops in the Arrowverse. Durance said of the writers:
More from Arrowverse
- The 9 best (and 8 worst) Arrowverse characters
- 27 best fighters in the Arrowverse, ranked
- All 8 Black Canary actresses ranked from worst to best
- 11 things nobody wants to admit about the Arrowverse
- The 7 best (and 6 worst) Arrowverse villains
"“My first thought was like, ‘Really? How are you going to manage this?”“But the writers are just spectacular about how they can pull all the different shows together and all of these different characters, and they make sense of all the timelines. So I was at first very, very curious to see what it would be, and getting to actually go out and do it, I of course was very excited to go back and get to play Lois again.”"
Guggenheim, a self-professed fan of Smallville, informed EW that the Batwoman segment carried every “nuance” and “little choice” perfectly, and he was thrilled to see Welling and Durance in the same legendary roles that opened the door for the two of them. Caroline Dries, showrunner of the very show they appear in, co-wrote the episode with Smallville alums Don Whitehead and Holly Henderson.
Of Welling’s performance, “It was bizarre [because] it felt like we hadn’t missed a beat,” Durance told EW. “It was just easy. It was like coming back and working with family.” Welling is not the only Supes to reprise their role; Brandon Routh will also reprise his role as an alternate earth Superman from Superman Returns.
