12. Mysterio

Film: Spider-Man: Far From Home

It takes some serious skill for a film to use one of the most famous comic book villains of all time and still manage to catch you off-guard with the character’s villainy. But that’s exactly what Spider-Man: Far From Home managed to do when it successfully subverted audiences’ expectations by making supervillain Mysterio the, well, villain.

Granted, that sounds a little on-the-nose but allow this writer to assure you that it was anything but. Introducing the character as an incredibly knowledgeable ally, the writers toyed with fans’ hopes of the multiverse by having him telling us all what we wanted to hear – something that made the eventual twist all the more jaw-dropping. They would further capitalize on that through the rapport Mysterio developed with Peter Parker and the on-screen chemistry between Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal.

A wronged employee of Tony Stark who sought to corrupt his legacy (and, as a result, a perfect mentor antagonist), Mysterio had Peter believing one thing when he was secretly tricking him into another. Manipulation was his strong-suit, and as he knew everything about Spider-Man, he was able to defeat him with ease, allowing him to live because of the bond that the pair had formed – a courtesy he was willing to renege when Peter came calling in London.
