Black Widow: Be warned, this movie is going to be dark
By Mark Lynch
The Black Widow trailer is here, and fans are excited. But this isn’t going to be your standard Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.
The Black Widow has trailer dropped, and it looks phenomenal. We may be seeing a Natasha Romanoff that’s coming off the events of Captain America: Civil War, but it looks like we’ll get a taste of what she was like long before she became an Avenger. Since we only know a little bit about her, this was a brilliant idea. We know she’s a trained Russian assassin, spy, and a ballerina. She was good at it too. That’s all we know. So what else did she get into? What made her leave Russia? Hopefully, all of these questions will be answered in 2020. One other thing you can tell from the trailer and Black Widow’s history is that this isn’t going to be a movie for everyone.
Natasha Romanoff has a dark past. In Avengers: Age of Ultron we find out something horrible. Part of her training in the Red Room was making her unable to produce children. Because of this, she considers herself a monster. As awful as that is, it’s likely we’ll find out that was just the beginning. Who knows what other cruel things were done to her. There were certainly days of beatings to make her tougher. There are other things like how she learned to be seductive and manipulative. We may even find out there were more atrocious things done to her. There are also the things she’s done, as well.
Natasha isn’t an angel, but she may have been worse before. Through flashbacks or conversations, we may get a better idea of the things she did for Russia. This includes lies, assassinations, brutal beatings, and so much more. Nick Fury doesn’t recruit just everyone. He brings in people that he can trust to do things that others won’t. How did she get this reputation; by being the same kind of person Fury is. Someone who’s willing to do whatever he can to keep the world spinning. Sometimes that involves unspeakable things. As Black Widow said, “I’ve got red on my ledger.” And that red is most likely blood.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. We haven’t even gotten into the other characters. Red Guardian is loyal to Russia. When it comes to his actions, he was probably more than happy to do what was required of him. In this interpretation, he may have been the one who gave Black Widow and Yelena Belova over to the Red Room when they were children. There’s also the inclusion of Taskmaster, and comic fans know he’s one of the more remorseless people in the Marvel Universe. He’s also incredibly skilled, enough to give Captain America a hard time. And then there’s Yelena Belova. In the comic books, she’s more than willing to lie, cheat, and steal and have zero guilt when it’s over. She’s an early pick for newcomer of 2020.
This isn’t an R-rated topic, but that doesn’t mean much. This won’t be the blood-soaked cursing fest you would get from Deadpool, but it’s going to have a lot of grim moments. There are going to be scenes where you’ll be shocked by what happened. More importantly, you’ll see how tough Black Widow is. After everything she’s been through, she still came out a better person. Someone who would eventually sacrifice herself to save the universe. Black Widow arrives theaters on May 1, 2020.
